Young woman held captive by Sheikh back home after Swaraj intervenes

Was sent to Dubai on promise of nanny's job

Amritsar: Simranjit Kaur of Pandori Gola village in Tarn Taran district of Punjab was sent to Dubai, ostensibly for working as a nanny. However, she was handed over to a Sheikh instead. She could return to India only after Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj intervened.

Amritsar’s DCP Lakhbeer Singh questioned the woman at the Amritsar airport on her return. She told the police that a woman of her village had sent her to Dubai through a Kerala-based travel agent Ibrahim. The woman’s daughter lives in Dubai.

Mobile, passport taken away

The woman was told that she would have to look after children and the money spent on sending her to Dubai would be deducted from the salary she would get for her job. She left for Dubai on 26 July. There she was received by an agent who took her to the house of a Sheikh. The moment she reached there, her mobile and passport was taken away from her and she was confined to a room.

The woman somehow managed to inform her mother. One of her relatives tweeted to the Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj. She asked the Indian Embassy in Dubai to take action without delay. The victim returned to India after the Embassy’s intervention.

Asked to work as bar girl

Ravneet Kaur alias Neetu

Another woman of the village, Sandeep Kaur, said that an agent had lured her and a friend of hers, Ravneet Kaur alias Neetu, on promise of high salaries in Dubai for looking after the children of a rich Punjabi family. However the agents in Dubai asked them to either work as bar girls or at the homes of Sheikhs as domestic helps. They had no option except to work as domestics.

Agents demands money

Somehow Sandeep managed to contact her family in India with the help of the wife of a Sheikh. The families pressurised the agent to bring Sandeep back to India. Sandeep’s uncle Baljeet Singh informed that the agent demanded Rs 1.80 lakh for the same. The family managed to raise only Rs 40,000 and then only Sandeep could return home. DSP Pyara Singh said Tarantaran police acted promptly after recording the statements of the women. He said woman agent Gurjeet Kaur has been arrested.
