You can now use 16-digit Virtual ID instead of Aadhaar for verification

New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Saturday said virtual ID mechanism that can be used in lieu of Aadhaar number for identity verification is now “operational” with its various authentication agencies.

The Virtual ID (VID) is a 16-digit random number mapped with Aadhaar number. It can only be generated, replaced or revoked by the Aadhaar number.

The Virtual ID feature aims at strengthening the privacy and security of Aadhaar data, given increasing concerns over collection of personal and demographic details of individuals.

UIDAI, which issues the 12-digit Aadhaar, however, said banks would have time until August 31 to deploy the new feature.

New Delhi: Taxpayers have been given time till March next year to link their PAN cards to Aadhaar, the government announced late on Saturday.

The tax department’s order was issued hours before the deadline was to end at midnight.

This is the fifth time that the government has extended the last date.
