New Delhi: T-Series Films, Ellipsis Entertainment, Emraan Hashmi Films together released a statement on Thursday which said that keeping in view the CBFC’s concerns with the Emraan Hashmi-starrer, Cheat India‘s name has now been changed.
“The CBFC had concerns about the title Cheat India. We had an extensive conversation with the Examining Committee and Revising Committee regarding the proposed change as the film has been in public domain for a year, and more importantly, because the theatrical teaser, trailer and television promos had already been certified with the original title,” read the statement.
“This would lead to dual communication a week before the release. The duress of lack of time left us with no choice but to mutually agree to the new title, Why Cheat India,” explained the statement.
Written and directed by Soumik Sen, Why Cheat India is a comedy drama film which features Emraan Hashmi and Shreya Dhanwanthary in lead roles. In the film Hashmi portrays the role of a man who is the mastermind behind the entrance examination scam which has a team of toppers who write exams for other candidates for money. The film attempts to highlight the corruption in the Indian education system.
The film was earlier scheduled to release on Januray 25, along with Thackeray and Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, but its release was preponed to avoid the clash with Thackeray. Now Why Cheat India will release on January 18.
