In an interview with Dainik Bhaskar’s Santosh Kumar, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke on various issues, including opposition unity, 2019 polls, NRC, grand alliance etc.
The SP, the BSP and other parties are coming together in UP. This means the BJP would be able to register a win on a fewer seats.
After the formation of our government in 2014, we felt such a situation would arise in a year or so because of the popularity of the PM and the government. The people still believe that the nation is safe in the hands of Narendra Modi. Despite united opposition, the BJP garnered 34-35 percent votes in by-polls in UP. Opposition parties cannot get their vote banks transferred to each other by forming alliances. The people are aware. They do not want a government of 50 parties.
You said votes are not transferred. But it happened in Karnataka and in by-polls.
In an alliance, two and two do not make four. Our performance in Karnataka was not bad at all. The highest number of seats we have ever won in the state is 110. This time we won 104. Not a big difference.
There is an atmosphere of tension in the country. It is Dalit versus upper castes, Hindus versus Muslims and so on.
I don’t see any tension. The social harmony which existed during the time of Atal government is visible even today.
BJP leaders said NRC would be extended to Bengal, even the entire country.
Every nation wants to know how many of its people are ‘swadeshi’ and how many are ‘videshi’. This decision was taken in national interest. It should not be used to create a rift between the Hindus and the Muslims.
But creation of two categories – swadeshi and videshi – could lead to a law and order problem as people would target foreigners.
There is no law and order problem in Assam. There is peace there although 40 lakh people are out of NRC.
Shatrughan Sinha, Yashwant Sinha and Arun Shourie have said the system is not functioning properly.
They are free to speak. I believe such allegations have no base.
They have alleged that no guidance was taken from Margdarshak Mandal.
Advaniji, Joshiji attend Parliamentary Board meetings. Need of a formal meeting of Margdarshak Mandal was never felt.
We identify ourselves as Hindus, Muslims or Sikhs. When shall we identify ourselves as Indians?
Some people think so. But not all. For example, the influence of ISIS increased at the global level but Muslims in India never supported it. People have faith in country’s culture.
