New Delhi: Four police personnel were suspended in Uttar Pradesh after a video of them harassing and assaulting a woman over her alleged relationship with a Muslim man went viral. The incident reportedly took place in Meerut a few days ago.
An investigation has been ordered in the case, news agency ANI reported.
In the 29-second video, male police officers are seen asking the woman why she is in a relationship with a Muslim man when there are so many Hindu men around. Following the questions and mockery, a lady constable is seen slapping the woman and also removed the scarf used by the woman to cover her face.
“You prefer Muslims when there are so many Hindus around,” taunts a policeman. At this point, the woman constable starts beating the young woman and removes the scarf she used to cover her face. The beating goes on and on throughout.
The cop, who is making the video, shared the video with his colleagues, and it reached the media.
The incident took place on Sunday, when the woman and her Muslim friend, both medical students in their twenties, were targeted by a group of men, allegedly from the right-wing Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). The men barged into the man’s home, manhandled the pair and handed them over to the police. Accusing the duo of committing “love jihad”, the attackers created a ruckus and took them to the police station.
The video was shot when the police rescued the two of them and were taking to the police station in separate vehicles. The VHP members reportedly asked the girl’s father to file a complaint, but he denied.
The harassment didn’t stop even after they reached the police station. The men from the right-wing organisation surrounded the couple and abused them. Additional police force had to be called in to control the situation.
