Tickets of confirmed passengers cancelled, asked to pay penalty for ticket-less travel

Jaipur: Dozens of passengers, holding confirmed AC Chair Car tickets on the Jaipur-Jodhpur Intercity Express on Monday, were shocked to discover that their tickets had been cancelled. To add insult to injury, they were fined for ticket-less travel!.

Smita had booked a seat in the AC chair car under Tatkal quota in the 22478 Jaipur-Jodhpur Express for Monday. She was allotted seat number 64 in coach C-2. After she boarded the train, she discovered that the coach was missing from the train. She had to complete the journey sitting outside the toilet in another coach.

Fined ₹1,440

IC Jain, a superintending engineer with the state water supply department had to face worse. He had booked a ticket through the IRCTC website on June 1. At the time of booking, the status of the ticket was confirmed. On boarding the train, he asked the TTE about his seat. He was told that he did not have a seat and that his ticket had been cancelled. The TTE then booked him for travelling without ticket and he had to pay ₹1,440 as fare and penalty.

Genesis of the problem

Later, it was revealed that the Railways, at the last moment, decided not attach the C-2 coach to the train and the status of all the passengers with confirmed bookings in the coach was changed to ‘wait-listed’. At the time of preparation of the chart, the system automatically cancelled all the wait-listed tickets.

The passengers later handed over a memorandum to the railway authorities at Jodhpur.

I was not in town. We will get the issue probed. This should not have happened
