[dropcap]A [/dropcap]Tamil Nadu man has been arrested after he allegedly raped and robbed a 48-year-old British woman near Palolem Beach, Goa. The woman was on her way back home from Canacona Railway station on Thursday.
“The accused has been identified as Ramachandran, 30, and is from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. We arrested him as he was trying to flee from the Margao railway station,” said Superintendent of Police (South Goa) Arvind Gawas.
CCTV footage near the scene of the offence and at the local railway station helped police track down the accused at the Margao railway station, located 35 km from Canacona village, he added.
The accused is also convicted for robbing the woman of her passport, Rs 20,000 cash and some other personal belongings, according to IGP Goa police Jaspal Singh. Later, all belongings, except cash, were found about 50 meters away from the crime scene.
The incident took place around 4:30 am. The victim has been visiting Goa regularly for the last 10 years.
Earlier in 2017, an Irish woman was raped during her holiday in Goa.
Back in 2008 as well, a British teenager was raped and killed on a trip in Goa. Her killers are yet to be caught. Two men who had faced charges of culpable homicide and grievous sexual assault were both cleared in 2016.
