New Delhi: It is amazing to think that sites and apps such as YouTube, Instagram, Vine, Tumblr and others have the power to put the spotlight on talent across a variety of different disciplines. But as you are about to see, success stories are in no short supply.

MARIA ARAGON

She is a YouTube and Twitter sensation who started by recording covers on her YouTube channel, but wasn’t getting much traction until Lady Gaga herself tweeted out her video link. With Gaga’s 52 million followers, Aragon’s viewership increased by 11 million in the first week. Since her online debut she has recorded commercials for The Gap and HTC mobile phones.

Famously known as the founder of ‘Humans of New York,’ Brandon Stanton is an American photographer and blogger. With his photo journalistic perspective, Brandon has taken hundreds of portraits of ordinary people on the streets of New York, along with snippets of small stories about their lives. Since then, he has had over 17.2 million likes on his official ‘Humans of New York’ Facebook page, and around 4.5 million followers on Instagram.

An Indian-Canadian based in Toronto, Canada, Superwoman took over the internet with her hilarious vlogs about situations that are quite relatable to all the youngsters. Sometimes portraying her Indian parents, iiSuperwomanii (aka Lily Singh) is a stand up comedian. Since starting her YouTube channel in 2010, she has garnered millions of subscribers. Superwoman has been on multiple talk shows, won a Teen’s Choice Award and been on a world tour. And she id listed as one of the highest paid YouTubers.

DADI NICOLAS

Even athletes have been turning to social media to get more attention from scouts. Football player Wedley Estime decided to create a highlight video showing his skills and post it on YouTube. This video got passed around to recruiters, who started sending in offers. Estime eventually signed with Virginia Tech, and has since changed his name to Dadi Nicolas. If you just aren’t getting the attention you think you deserve, it may be worthwhile to turn to social media.

MARQUEE BROWNLEE

He is a producer, reviewer, technology enthusiast and an internet personality who started his famous technology based YouTube channel2008 with the name, MKBHD, is an American YouTuber, best known for his technology-focused videos. He has over 5.8 million subscribers and over 851 million total video views. In August 2013, Vic Gundotra, former Senior Vice President, Social for Google,called Brownlee “the best technology reviewer on the planet right now” making him the 3rd most subscribed technology channel on YouTube.

KANAN AND BISWA KALYAN RATH

These former engineers and bloggers created the series Pretentious Movie Reviews a hilarious YouTube series reviewing bad Bollywood movies. Bengaluru-based Kanan Gill and Biswa Kalyan Rath chanced upon the idea of reviews of iconic bad Bollywood movies after some Bollywood-defies-logic trauma. They are known to have done justice to all the movies they have reviewed, creatively and hilariously explaining them. Their videos gathered millions of views.

MURAD OSMANN

A Russian photographer famous for his ‘Follow Me’ series, Murad Osmann takes pictures of his wife Natalia Zakharova holding his hand from the back, with a beautiful view in the front. His pictures following his girlfriend around the world have gotten him over 4.2 million followers on Instagram. The series was conceived in 2011 during the couple’s trip to Barcelona which now has lead to the images intrigue and endear viewers to the extent that the series started its viral social media success. The fascinating element of concealed identity coupled with breathtaking scenery have turned this duo a social media phenomenon.

We saved the best for the last. If you haven’t seen or read any of his tweets, you seriously need to check social media a bit more. Tweeting unusually funny jokes and facts, Pakalu Papito has taken the internet memes to a whole new level. He has around 1.63 million followers on twitter.
