With teary eyes, Delhi bids farewell to Sheila Dikshit

New Delhi: The mortal remains of former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit were consigned to flames on Sunday with full state honours, with colleagues, Congress workers and admirers braving heavy rains and gusty winds to bid her final farewell.

Earlier Sheila Dikshit’s mortal remains were brought to the Congress headquarters on Akbar road where political leaders paid their last respects to the former Delhi chief minister. They are now headed to Nigambodh ghat to perform her last rites.

Earlier at the Congress Headquarters, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi said of Dikshit, “She was a great support for me. She became almost an elder sister and a friend. This is a big loss for the Congress party. I will always remember her.”

Chants of “Sheila Dikshit Amar Rahe! Sheila Dikshit Zindabad!” followed the late Congress leader’s funeral procession. The three-time Delhi chief minister will be given a state funeral and two days of mourning will be observed, the Delhi government said.
