Shashi Tharoor gets ‘apology’ note from British born

New Delhi: Shashi Tharoor has never let up a chance to talk about the British Raj and the incredible devastation caused by British before Independence. When he was among the selected authors invited to tell a ‘true story’ at the Auckland writers festival, he narrated the story of the Jallianwallah Bagh massacre.

When troops under Colonel Reginald Dyer fired for a good ten minutes on an unarmed crowd of thousands, the massacre left over 1,000 dead. The brutality stunned the entire nation which lost faith in the intentions of the British rulers. Tharoor disclosed what happened after that.

@ShashiTharoor: When selected authors were invited to tell a 7-minute “true story” at the opening gala of the #aucklandwritersfestival, I told the story of Jallianwallah Bagh. An Englishman came up afterwards at the book signing and pressed this note into my hand.

The note said, “I’m British born, and I am sorry.”
