Two get death for rape, murder of 12-year-old in Barmer

Barmer (Rajasthan): A court here awarded death sentence to two persons convicted of gang-raping and murdering a 12-year-old . Accused Shravan Singh and Ghewar Singh were sentenced to death, while three others, Prahlad Singh, Narsingh and Shankar Singh were sentenced to seven years in jail.

The accused abducted the minor girl from her home in village Ranva under Sadar police station in Barmer on March 29-30, 2013, and gang-raped her. To destroy evidence, they killed her by throwing her down from a hill.

Father changed statement under duress

The accused threatened girl’s father and forced him to give a statement that the girl was mentally unstable and fell down from the hill accidentally. But the girl’s mother did not bow before the threats and lodged a complaint with the police. The accused were arrested on the third day of the incident and they admitted to the crime.

55 POCSO courts

Meanwhile, following the state government’s notification establishing 55 new POCSO courts in the state, the Rajasthan High Court has appointed presiding officers for these courts. The courts have started functioning.

With this Rajasthan has become the country’s first state to have POCSO courts in all 35 judicial districts, while some districts will have more than one POCSO courts. This will ensure quick hearing in cases related to crimes against minor girls and women.
