New Delhi: Senior BJP leaders said on Wednesday the Congress does not believe in Rahul Gandhi’s leadership after Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was given her first official role in the opposition party in an election year.
Rahul Gandhi has appointed his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as party general secretary in charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh. She will take charge in the first week of February.
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Union health minister JP Nadia targeted the main opposition party on the appointment by pointing out that the Congress has always kept the member of just one family on the forefront.
“Priyanka Gandhi furthered the legacy of Gandhi Congress Pvt Limited and officially becomes the General Secretary of @INCIndia. It is also the first official declaration from congress that they don’t have trust in Rahul Gandhi’s leadership (sic),” Nadda tweeted.
Another BJP leader Sambit Patra attacked the Gandhi family on the same line as Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is all set to play her role in active politics from February 1.
“The Congress has basically publicly announced that Rahul Gandhi has failed and needs crutches from within the family.”
Patra said the Congress could not look beyond the Gandhi family and this had been demonstrated once again.
“Party is the family for the BJP whereas family is the party for Congress. All selections are done in only one family. Somewhere Rahul has failed… Who will be the next after Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi? Only one family. The new India is asking this question,” he said.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s husband Robert Vadra, a businessman who is being investigated for alleged corrupt land deals in Haryana and Rajasthan, has been on the BJP’s target.
‘Not sent Priyanka for just two months’
- “I have not sent Priyanka and Jyotiraditya for just two months. I have sent them to take Congress’ ideology forward in Uttar Pradesh. Our ideology of standing and fighting for the poor, for the youth, for the farmers… There will be new thinking, new ideology in Uttar Pradesh,” Rahul Gandhi told reporters after Congress announced that Priyanka will take charge of east UP.
- Asked whether it was a precursor for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra contesting the national election, due by May, Rahul Gandhi said: “It is up to Priyanka if she wants to. My main point is we won’t play on the back foot – be it UP or Gujarat or anywhere.”
The Congress has also replaced Ashok Gehlot as AICC general secretary (organisation) with KC Venugopal. Jyotiraditya Scindia will be general secretary along with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, but in charge of western UP.
The Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, has been appointed general secretary in charge of Haryana, the party said.
