Dasua: In a heart-wrenching incident in Gangia village of Dasua town in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district, stray dogs killed a two-year-old boy by chewing the lower part of his body, below the abdomen.
Toddler Manpreet died by the time his parents learnt about the incident. The dogs attacked him when he was going from one camp in the field to the other at a distance of about 100 feet.
Was youngest among four siblings
Manpreet was youngest among four siblings. His two elder sisters Sudha, 13, Sapna, 9, and brother Gurpreet, 5, had gone to school when the incident took place.
Manpreet’s mother Manju Devi was inconsolable. She said she did not know when Manpreet went out. When she did not see Manpreet at home, she came out and started looking for him. She saw the stray dogs attacking her boy and raised an alarm. But there was no one nearby.
The child had died by the time the people gathered and drove away the dogs.
Manpreet’s father Nek Ram, who has been working at a farm for the past four years, said he belongs to Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh and that his family had been residing in Punjab for the last nine years.
According to the information received through RTI from the animal husbandry department, there are about five lakh stray dogs in the state. However, there is no official policy to control the growing population of strays.
