Punjab: Farmers baffled as ‘inflated’ loan amounts waived under govt scheme

Kiratpur Sahib: In village Samlah in Changar area of Kiratpur Sahib (in Ropar district of Punjab), some farmers took loans of Rs 20,000 to 60,000 from the cooperative society. But their loans to the tune of Rs 2.25 lakh were waived under crop waiver scheme. This came to light when farmers received certificates of loan waiver.

Farmers blame cooperative society secretary

Farmer Chinder Ram and other farmers of the village have accused cooperative society secretary of taking loan in their names without informing them and bungling it.

On January 29 farmers lodged a complaint with central cooperative department. The department has formed a committee to investigate the matter. Committee member inspector Samardeep Singh said the matter was being probed.

Availed loan of 40,000 but Rs 1.26 lakh waived

Bhaskar talked with some farmers in this regard. Farmer Ratan Chand said he took loan of Rs 40,000 from village’s cooperative society but got a certificate stating his loan of Rs 1,26,596 had been waived. Another farmer Anant Ram said he took Rs 60,000 but loan of Rs 1,14,698. Anar Chand availed loan of Rs 20,000. But the certificate showed his loan was Rs 94,514. Amritlal’s loan of Rs 1,98,455 was waived although he had taken only Rs 20,000. All of them have accused secretary of irregularity.

Interest kept accumulating: secretary

On the other hand cooperative society secretary Swarn Singh said the farmers had availed loans years back. The interest kept accumulating for so many years and so the amount waived is much more than the loan they availed. He said investigations would reveal that there has been no irregularity.
