Punjab/ 4 children charred to death as school van catches fire in Sangrur

Sangrur: At least four children were charred to death after a school van, they were travelling in, caught fire in Sangrur, Punjab on Saturday. The van belonged to a public school in Sangrur.

Eight children were safely taken out by people working in nearby fields, police said. However, four children in the age group of 10 to 12 years were charred to death, the police added.

The accident took place on the Longowal-Sidsamachar road in Sangrur. The children were going back home from the school when their van caught fire.

The cause of the fire in the school van has not been ascertained. A total of 12 students were inside the school van when the incident took place.

Passerby informed the van driver: According to the eyewitnesses, the school van was only a few metres away from the school when a passerby informed the driver and asked him to stop the van.

People broke panes to rescue kids: Eight children were rescued after the driver raised an alarm. Locals, who were working in the nearby fields rushed to the spot and broke panes to rescue the children.

While eight students were saved on time, four kids burnt to death since one of the doors of the van got jammed. Two out of four deceased children belonged to a single-family.

The school administration had purchased this van last night. The van reportedly had the capacity to carry only eight children.
