Jaipur: On Wednesday, the Rajasthan Government organised a mega programme at the police grounds here for formally promoting 6,000 constables in the state police as head constables. Never in the history of the state were any class of employees promoted in such large numbers in one go.
Assembly elections are due in the state two months from now and the move is being seen as part of the government’s strategy to woo the cops and their family members. The total strength of the police force in the state is around one lakh.
Insurance cover raised tenfold
The chief minister Vasundhararaje Scindia was present at the function. She announced that the police personnel up to head constable rank would now be insured for Rs 10 lakhs instead of the present Rs 1 lakh. The insurance cover would be Rs 40 lakh for cops of ASI to Inspector rank and Rs 60 lakh for DSP to DGP rank.
The chief minister pinned badges on the uniform of 15 senior constables. For the rest, their family members did the honours. The promotions were done on the basis of seniority and no test was taken.
