NRI fraud: In Punjab, 40,000 women waiting for years for their husbands to return from abroad

Jalandhar: In Punjab, about 40,000 women are waiting for their husbands to return from abroad. About 20,000 of them belong to Doaba area alone. But there is no effective law to deal with runaway NRIs.

To deal with the problem, foreign minister Sushma Swaraj had presented a bill ‘The registration of marriage of non-resident Indian’ in the Rajya Sabha. But there was no further progress due to the indifferent attitude of the MPs.

Honeymoon brides for holiday marriage

The practice of NRI husbands deserting their wives after marriage has become an organised crime in Punjab. This has already been given the name of ‘holiday marriage’ or ‘honeymoon brides’.

Few days after the marriage, the grooms run away with jewellery and valuables. Later the bride is driven away by in-laws. In Punjab, 627 NRIs have been declared absconders by the police.
