New Delhi: One of India’s oldest railway station in Uttar Pradesh, Mughalsarai, was renamed after RSS ideologue Deen Dayal Upadhyaya on Tuesday.
The Centre had in 2017 cleared UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s request to rename the station, despite protests raised in parliament by various parties.
On his birth anniversary in June 2017, the UP government had decided to rename Mughalsarai Junction in Chandauli district after Upadhyaya, who was found dead near the station in mysterious circumstances in 1968.
After the approval of the state cabinet, the proposal was forwarded to the Railway Ministry.
The Mughalsarai station was set up in 1862 when the East India Company linked Howrah to Delhi by rail. Since it was an overnight stopover for caravans, it was named “Mughal Sarai (Inn)”.
The move drew flak from opposition parties which accused the ruling party of attempting to tamper with history. And, of course, Twitter couldn’t stay behind.
