New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Tuesday cleared the proposal to rename ‘Allahabad’ as ‘Prayagraj’ after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, on a trip to Allahabad on Saturday, announced there was a proposal to rename the city, amid protest from opposition parties.
“Allahabad to be called Prayagraj from today,” Siddharth Nath Singh, the state health minister, told news agency ANI.
After the announcement, Justice Markandey Katju, former Supreme Court judge, took to social media to congratulate Yogi Adityanath and released a list of 30 Indian cities, which also included an earlier released list of 18 UP cities, whose names must be changed.
His tweet read, “I recommend to the Central and State Governments to change the names of all Indian cities named after Babur ki Aulads. Hari Om.”
The list evoked mixed reactions from people. While some got the sarcasm, others took the list literally.
