Modi applauds Swachh Bharat, attacks Congress for failed urban development

Indore/Rajgarh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated eight major urban development projects in MP including Mohanpura dam worth Rs 3800 crores in Rajgarh and gave away Swachh Survekshan 2018 awards to 12 cities including Bhopal and Indore.

Speaking at two different programmes at Rajgarh and Indore, Narendra Modi praised the success of Swachh Bharat campaign and hit out at the his detractors for mocking the ambitious project.

Modi simultaneously launched an attack on the Congress, saying that the party ruled the country for long period but badly neglected urban development.

On Congress

In a veiled attack on Congress at Rajgarh, Modi said that to glorify one family, deliberate attempts were being made to belittle the contributions of other towering leaders in nation building. He said the party was spreading ‘lies, confusion and pessimism’ and was cut off from the ground reality.

He said under Congress rule, MP was called a BIMARU state, but the BJP pulled the state out of that tag. “The Congress never saw this as an insult to the people of the state,”he added.

On MP’s role in Swachh Bharat

He praised MP’s contribution to the success and made specific reference to Indore, saying that the city had shown those making fun of his government’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan how change can be accomplished. Indore last month emerged as the cleanest city in the country in Swachh Survekshan for second consecutive year. Bhopal got second rank.

Modi said 2,300 cities in 18 states have been declared ODF (open defecation-free) and on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi next year, the dream of a Swachh Bharat will be fulfilled. He added 8.30 crore toilets were constructed in the country in the last four years, 65 lakhs of them in Madhya Pradesh alone.

Tributes to Mookerjee

Modi paid rich tributes to Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his death anniversary, saying “His vision inspires us even today and helps us come out of despondency.”

Stripped of black shirts

Some youth who were wearing black shirts were made to strip them off at the entry of the Mohanpura dam inauguration programme. The police were apprehensive that they might protest and create ruckus at the event.
