Mob pelts stones at police station in Indore after youth dies in custody

Indore: A 25-year-old youth, a suspect in a theft case, died in police custody in Gandhi Nagar in Indore on Tuesday. A day later on Wednesday hundreds of people gheraoed the police station and pelted stones. They staged chakka jam.

Upon receiving information minister Jitu Patwari arrived on the spot and assured to take action against the guilty. Police used mild force to disperse the mob.

The youth was allegedly beaten up by the police. A judicial inquiry has been ordered into the case. Reports said 25-year-old Sanju, a resident of Rijhlay village, was detained by the police on suspicion of theft. The police allegedly beat him up during interrogation. When his condition deteriorated the police admitted him to a hospital where he died.

Rajubai, Sanju’s sister, said that her brother and mother Nandibai were arrested by the Gandhi Nagar police in connection with theft. She said that they were beaten up during questioning. As Sanju’s condition started deteriorating he was admitted to MY Hospital. Sanju died during treatment in the hospital, she added.

Senior Superintendent of Police Ruchi Vardhan Mishra said that Sanju was detained in connection with thefts which took place on April 16 and April 20 in Arihant Nagar. He was quizzed by the Gandhi Nagar police and when his condition worsened he was rushed to MY Hospital where he died during treatment. SSP said that police station incharge has been suspended and judicial inquiry has been ordered into the matter.

The district administration has said that compensation amount would be provided to the kin of the deceased. He said the Chief Minister Kamal Nath would be apprised of the issue and every possible assistance would be provided to them.
