As Egypt unveils footballer Mo Salah’s statue, fans say ‘that’s not him’

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]fter Egypt unveiled the sculpture of Liverpool and country’s football star Mohamed Salah, it is raising eyebrows on social media.

The sculpture of the Egyptian forward, which was shown at the World Youth Forum in his native country’s Sharm-el Sheikh, comes after a bust of fellow footballer Cristiano Ronaldo was widely mocked.

The statue shows Salah, who set a new Premier League goalscoring record last season, in his trademark celebration pose with arms aloft to the crowd.

The 26-year-old Salah broke the Premier League goalscoring record last season with 32 goals in his debut campaign scored 32 goals in his debut season with Liverpool, won England’s player’s player of the year award and was nominated for Fifa’s world player of the year.

But the likeness of the work by the Egyptian sculptor Mia Abdel Allah has not been quite so acclaimed as the player himself.

However, rather than act as a tribute, the statue has become the butt of several jokes on the internet, especially due to its likeness with several other celebrities.
