Meet Bihar’s ‘Kisan Chachi’: Taunted by in-laws, boycotted by society but today her products are sold abroad

Anandpur (Muzaffarpur): Rajkumari Devi, 63, of Bihar is popularly known as ‘Kisan Chachi’ or farmer aunt. Hailing from Anandpur village in Muzaffarpur district, Rajkumari was married in 1974. She was taunted by her in-laws as she did not have a child even several years after marriage. In 1983, a daughter was born to her, but she continued to face humiliation and finally she left her husband’s home. She started farming and adopted scientific methods. She made pickle and marmalade and started selling them on bicycle.

Society boycotted her, but she motivated other women

But the society could not accept a woman selling the products in the market and she was boycotted. However, she did not stop. In 2003, her products were awarded at Kisan Mela. Even the chief minister visited her home.

Rajkumari inspired other women and today 250 women are associated with her and they make pickle and marmalade. Now she rides a scooty instead of a bicycle. Their products are even exported abroad.

Modi praised her, Big-B invited her

In 2006, she was honoured with Kisan Shri Samman. She was nicknamed ‘Kisan Chachi’ and was invited to Vibrant Gujarat-2013 summit. The then chief minister Narendra Modi uploaded the design of her food processing model on the official website. In 2015 and 2016, Amitabh Bachchan had called her to take part in Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) programme.
