Etah: Almost two years after the Supreme Court declared that the practice of triple talaq is unconstitutional, a man at a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Etah district gave triple talaq to his wife over phone only because she was 10 minutes late in returning to her home.
The woman accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment. Police have registered a case and launched a probe.
Had gone to see her ailing grandmother
Afroz, a resident of Alipur village in Nayagaon area, has a private job in Hyderabad. Afroz’s wife Shambul Begum went to see her paternal grandmother on January 18. Her husband had told her to return within half an hour but she was late by only 10 minutes. The angry husband sent her brother to her wife’s home, spoke to her over his phone and gave her talaq.
In-laws did not allow her to visit her parents
Shambul told the police that she got married a year-and-half back but soon after the marriage her in-laws started demanding more dowry. As her parents were unable to give more money, her in-laws started harassing her. They didn’t even allow her to go to her parents’ home as they had failed to meet their dowry demands.
In-laws thrashed her
The victim said that after her husband gave her triple talaq over the phone, she reached her in-laws’ home. But her in-laws thrashed her. Inspector Ramsia Maurya said that currently there is no section to deal with cases related to triple talaq and so a case of dowry harassment has been registered.
