Bhopal: The Sampark Kranti Express, going from Tirupati to Hazrat Nizamuddin, stopped at platform number 2 of Bhopal Junction at 9.04 am on Wednesday morning.
People living in Bhopal’s Arif Nagar, Jail Road, and Ahir Mohalla also got off this train. These people are relatives among themselves, who had returned cheerfully after attending an event in Hyderabad.
Out of these 5 people fell victim to the accident due to the falling of a ramp at Bhopal station. The mishap took place when the slab of a ramp connecting the foot-over bridge between platform number 2 and 3 collapsed at the station.
‘There was a loud sound and ramp fell’: Wiping tears in her eyes, Asima says- “We 28 people returned from Hyderabad. Our reservation was in S1, S3 and S6 bogies. After getting off the train, we all gathered at one place and wanted to climb the ramp to reach Foot Over Bridge, my sister Mariam was walking a few steps ahead of me. Suddenly there was a loud sound. Before we could understand anything, the front of the ramp fell down.’
‘We started looking for each other’: Asma says- ‘Mariam was buried in the rubble. Along with her Nazia, Sameemurrahman, Khalid and Ayan also fell and were injured. We threw the luggage and started looking for each other. As soon as everyone got out we rushed them to the hospital. Luckily everyone survived.’
The injured include Arif Nagar resident Nait Jahan (40), wife of Azhar Khan, his son Ayan (18), Nazia (40), wife of Adar Khan, Jail Road resident Sameemurrahman (40), Khalilurrahman (38), Mangalwara Cantonment resident Khalid Baig (38), Vidisha, Ahir Mohalla resident Mariam (20), wife of Ejazur Rahman and Anupam Sharma (31). Apart from them, another person suffered minor injuries.
The Bhopal railway division has ordered a high-level probe into the incident.
Public Relations Minister, PC Sharma reached the Bhopal Railway station. As per the direction of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, Sharma announced the grant of 50-50 thousand rupees to the seriously injured passengers and ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident, Official Handle of the Department of Public Relations, Government of Madhya Pradesh announced on Twitter.
According to the state’s PR minister PC Sharma, the CM has directed for Rs 50,000 assistance to the critically injured and Rs 10,000 to others who were injured.
Senior railway officials, local BJP MLA Vishwas Sarang, and state railway police officials have rushed to the spot.
The state government will write to the Centre and Ministry of Railways to immediately get all such bridges in Bhopal and elsewhere in the state properly inspected and repaired to avert any such mishaps in the future.
In a tweet, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath called the incident “unfortunate”.
“At Bhopal Railway Station, the collapse of a portion of overbridge is extremely tragic. Some people have been injured in the accident. Wish a speedy recovery to those injured. Officials concerned have been directed to offer assistance,” Nath wrote.
Former CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan also tweeted “Initially I got to know from TV channels that two persons had died in the mishap. But fortunately, no casualties took place.”
