Asian Games 2018: India clinch bronze, their 15th medal in men’s hockey

Jakarta: India beat Pakistan 2-1 to claim a record 15th medal in men’s hockey at the Asian Games, surpassing Pakistan’s tally of 14. India’s 15 medals are joint-most by a participating nation in an event in a team sport. Japan won its 15th medal in men’s water polo just a couple of minutes ago.

Pakistan fails to win an Asian Games medal in men’s hockey for the second time after finishing fourth in 2002. Akashdeep Singh scored a field goal in the third minute while Harmanpreet Singh extended India’s lead in the 50th minute off a penalty corner. For Pakistan, Muhammad Atiq scored a goal in the 52nd minute to give his team some hopes. World number five India will go back home with a bronze, having beaten 13th ranked Pakistan for the second time in the last three months. The Indians had defeated Pakistan 4-0 in the Champions Trophy in June.
