Independence Day 2018: All about ‘Ayushman Bharat’

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday unveiled his government’s flagship healthcare project Ayushman Bharat during his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort.

PM Modi said, Ayushman Bharat or the National Health Protection Scheme will be launched on September 25 on the birth anniversary of BJP ideologue Deen Dayal Upadhyay.

“The health-care initiatives of the Government of India will have a positive impact on 50 crore Indians. It is essential to ensure that we free the poor of India from the clutches of poverty due to which they cannot afford health care.”, he added.

Ayushman Bharat

It is a healthcare scheme to provide medical care to vulnerable families or an estimated 50 crore people. Under this scheme, a health cover of Rs 5 lakh would be given to each beneficiary family per year.

It will be the largest healthcare scheme in the world if implemented. Under Ayushman Bharat, people will be able to avail cashless cover of medical expenditure during treatment at identified or empanelled private hospitals across the country. Insurance cover under Ayushman Bharat will include pre and post-hospitalisation expenses.

Benefits under Ayushman Bharat

The principle for selection of the beneficiary families is their socio-economic vulnerability. The aim is to make sure that no vulnerable family is left out of Ayushman Bharat cover. There is no limitation on family size and age of the members under Ayushman Bharat scheme.

PM Modi on Wednesday said that the scope of Ayushman Bharat would be expanded in future to include lower middle class and upper middle class.
