Maria Sakkari and Stefanos Tsitsipas teamed up to help Greece beat Switzerland in their Hopman Cup tie on Thursday night. And after beating Roger Federer, Maria Sakkari has produced a hilarious fan-girl moment.
After the final point of their mixed doubles match, Sakkari was not any more Federer’s opponent, but his biggest fan. The 23-year-old pulled off a brilliant return of Federer’s serve to seal the win, and was over the moon after match point.
Shaking hands with the 37-year-old legend, Sakkari noticed Federer’s towel on his seat, and sneaked over to his side and stole it! She produced a cheeky grin as she took it up as a souvenir, before stuffing it in her bag.
“I don’t know how I made it,” Sakkari said of her match-winning return. “I think I only returned two of Federer’s serves the whole match and the second one was the last point and the most important.”
Earlier, Federer overcame a scare in the first set tiebreak to win 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4) in 93 minutes. The win gave Switzerland a 1-0 lead in the tie – enough to book them a spot in Saturday’s final given they already beat Great Britain (3-0) and the US (2-1) earlier in the tournament.
“I’m very happy. That was always the goal to get to the final,” Federer said. “On top of it I’m playing well.” Greece needed to beat Switzerland 3-0 to reach the final.
