Hours after a police raid, 2 inmates die in Patna shelter home

Patna: After two women inmates of a shelter home in Patna died under mysterious circumstances hours after a police raid on Friday, its owner Chirantan Kumar and his secretary Renuka Dayal, have been arrested.

A 40-year-old woman and an 18-year-old girl from the Aasra shelter home here died on Friday night in the Patna Medical College and Hospital. Neither the police nor the social welfare department were informed of the incident.

Police said they were informed about the deaths only on Sunday morning, and added the doctors had declared the inmates dead on arrival. Over 70 inmates stay at the shelter which opened on May 1.

The police had arrested an employee of the shelter who was helping inmates to escape the facility for women with special needs, NDTV reported. The cops were at the shelter on Friday for several hours to investigate his role and motive, but the shelter officials remained tight-lipped about the deaths, police said.

Medical board formed

DSP (law and order, Patna), Manoj Kumar Sudhanshu said, according to shelter home authorities, the two inmates were taken to the hospital following complaints of diarrhoea and high fever.
