New Delhi: The Serendipity Arts Foundation is presenting their commissioned Charpai Project, at the India Design ID 2019, in association with The Park hotel, scheduled to take place from February 12-15, at the
Okhla NSIC Grounds.
The charpai was one of last year’s key themes at the festival — an Indian piece of furniture with a unique design sensibility and significance across the country.
The charpai is a rectangular wooden frame with four legs (hence the word char (four) pai (legs)), and woven fiber/fabric as a surface. It is used across the Indian subcontinent, particularly in the hot, and relatively dry regions of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Maharashtra.
The installation at India Design aims to highlight how material handcrafts intersect with design, architecture and technology, looking at how the design language and construction of the charpai may be relevant in a contemporary context.
Serendipity Arts Foundation is a non-profit organisation with a vision of energising arts production, awareness and practice across South Asia.
