Haryana/ Babita Phogat ties knot with Vivek Sihag; said- Father did not allow us to doll up, today my wish fulfilled, took 8th ‘phera’ to save daughters

Charkhi Dadri (Haryana): Wrestler Babita Phogat and Bharat Kesari Vivek Sihag tied the knot on Sunday. The couple took an extra eighth phera, which she dedicated to the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” initiative, intended to curb the incidence of female feticide in the country, which has led to a skewed sex ratio. Haryana is one of the worst-affected.

Before taking the phera, Babita said – ‘Father did not allow us sisters to doll up, but today the wish has been fulfilled. Today I am very happy after becoming a bride.’

Babita’s kanyadaan was done for just 1 rupee.

‘Very happy after wearing an bridal dress’: Babita said, “When we used to go to the wedding ceremony of other girls, we sisters used to wear bangles and rings many times seeing other girls. But Dad did not allow. He often said that your goal should be just wrestling. When the goal is achieved, then do the makeup. I am very happy about wearing a bridal dress.”

Only 21 people attended the simple wedding ceremony in Balaali. Vivek’s Tau (father’s elder brother) Rajpal and uncle (chacha) Omprakash also came to bless the couple.

The couple also planted trees as a part of their wedding ceremony, sending an important message to protect the environment.

Phogat is India’s first female gold medalist wrestler and has been the role model for young girls. She said she will continue her wrestling and will be part of active politics even after marriage.

Babita was a BJP candidate from Dadri: Babita Phogat was a BJP candidate from Dadri in Haryana Assembly elections. Independent candidate Sombir won from this seat. Babita said that she is getting married, but is not giving up politics.

She said she will be associated with Dadri. I will continue to work with the government to speed up the development there. I will try my best for the promises I made to the people, she said.
