Gwalior: During a marriage ceremony on Friday night and Saturday early morning at Gola ka Mandir area in Gwalior, all the merriment and gaiety turned obnoxious when the bridegroom, a soldier with the Indian Army, and his kin attacked the parents of the bride on the issue of dowry. When the 26-year-old girl saw her parents being beaten up, she ran to intervene but was pushed by the groom’s brother so hard that she fell unconscious.
The other soldiers, friends of the groom, fired five shots in the air to keep the bride’s family terrified.
After the bride’s father lodged a complaint, the police from Gola ka Mandir police station rounded up the bridegroom and his family members and registered a case under the Dowry Act.
According to the complaint, Mulluprasad Shivhare, a resident of Amaltas Colony, is a retired soldier. He had fixed his daughter Neha’s (26) marriage with Sumit Shivhare, a jawan with the Indian Army and posted in Amritsar, in September. Mulluprasad had committed to pay ₹8 lakh in cash besides a motorbike.
The groom’s family raised their demand during ‘lagan’ ceremony on May 7 after which ₹11.35 lakh in cash, a gold chain and a gold ring was given by Mulluprasad. During the ‘phera’ rituals early on Saturday morning, Sumit and his kin demanded ₹2 lakh more for an air-conditioner and a Royal Enfield Bullet. When the demand could not be met, they refused to complete the ‘pheras’.
When Neha’s mother attempted to convince them, Sumit’s brother caught her by her neck and began beating her, Mulluprasad and husband of Neha’s sister.
Unable to see her parents and family members being beaten up, Neha attempted to intervene but was pushed and fell unconscious. Sumit and his kin packed the gifts they received and took them along after snatching Neha’s mother’s gold chain.
‘Called me a servant’
Neha’s brother Saurabh said that Sumit called him a servant and had spit ‘paan’ on his hands during ‘lagan’ ceremony. “We ignored it but it was unbearable when he began beating us even when we silently kept on accepting their demands,” he added. Neha was inconsolable and said that she could have never imagined that she would have to witness her parents being insulted in such a way.
