Los Angeles: The nominations for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced with HBO’s hit fantasy show Game of Thrones making a comeback and securing a total of 22 nods.
The nominations, which were announced by The Handmaid’s Tale star Samira Wiley and The Blacklist actor Ryan Eggold, also saw actor Sandra Oh securing her maiden for nod lead actress in a drama series for her role in Killng Eve.
She became the first actress of Asian descent to earn a nomination for lead actress. The Game of Thrones was closely followed by the Westworld, another show from the HBO stable, with 21 nominations. The NBC’s Saturday Night Live also got 21 nods.
However, HBO’s 17-year streak of being the most nominated network for TV’s most coveted prize was snapped by the streaming giant Netflix, which got a total of 112 nominations.
Hulu’s A Handmaid’s Tale, which won the award for best drama series last year, stood third with 20 nominations, while The Assassination of Gianni Versace was fourth with 18 nominations.
Oh, who plays a MI5 spy on BBC America’s Killing Eve, has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy five times before. She will be joined by Claire Foy (The Crown), Tatiana Maslaney (Orphan Black), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Keri Russell (The Americans) and Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld).
Wood’s Westworld co-stars — Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright — have been nominated in the lead actor in a drama series category. They face tough competition from the last time winner Sterling K Brown, who has picked up another nod for This Is Us.
Nominees in the drama series category include The Handmaid’s Tale, Game of Thrones, This Is Us, The Crown, The Americans, Stranger Things and Westworld. Thrones stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage and Diana Rigg have all picked up nods for the show.
More than one month after his death, Anthony Bourdain has been honoured with two Emmy nominations. Bourdain’s show Parts Unknown earned six nominations overall while its digital extension Explore Parts Unknown also picked up a nod.
In the comedy stakes, it is nomination galore for the second season of Donald Glover’s Atlanta, Netflix’s GLOW and Amazon’s Golden Globe-winning The Marvellous Mrs Maisel, which sees Rachel Brosnahan go up against Pamela Adlon (Better Things), Allison Janney (Mom) and Issa Rae of Insecure fame.
The 70th Annual Primetime Emmys will be held at the Microsoft Theater on September 17 and hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che.
