Jaipur: A man called on Jaipur Mayor Ashok Lahoti on Tuesday and introduced him as Ajay Rana, personal secretary (PS) to Union Minister for Surface Transport Nitin Gadkari. He was accompanied by the owner of a local company called ‘Prahari’.
‘Prahari’ was awarded the contract for sanitation services in the city in 2011. However, as it did not deduct the PF of its employees, the then Mayor had freezed a payment of Rs 12 crore to the company.
Rana asked the Mayor to ensure that the payment was released. The Mayor sought his ID card but he said that he had forgotten it at his home in Delhi. “The way he was dressed and his manner of speaking made me suspicious,” the Mayor said.
Lahoti then clicked pictures of the man without him being any the wiser and sent them through WhatsApp to Gadkari’s office. There, the minister’s personal staff saw the pictures and reported back that no such person worked in the office.
The Mayor then asked his staff to contact the police and kept the man engaged in conversation till the cops reached the place. Later it was revealed that the man’s real name was Ashok Pundir. A native of Meerut, he was living in Delhi for some time.
He had contacted Kamaljeet Singh, the owner of the company, promising to get the amount released in return for Rs 2.5 crore.
