On 24 September, the Indian government announced the Dadasaheb Phalke Award to Amitabh Bachchan, the highest honor in Indian cinema. Just 37 years before that, he returned home after spending two months in the hospital after a fatal accident on the sets of the film ‘Coolie’. A video of his homecoming is now going viral on social media.
In the video, Amitabh touches the feet of father Harivansh Rai Bachchan and mother Teji Bachchan after getting off the car. His aarti is performed at the door. Apart from this, he is also seen cuddling the children present there. In it, Amitabh also mentions the date of homecoming. He says, “Today is September 24. Just two months before that I was badly injured. Today I am sitting in front of you only because of the tireless efforts of the doctors.”
Was injured during fight scene: In July 1982, ‘Coolie’ was shooting in Bangalore. According to the script, in a fight scene of the film, Puneet Issar’s punch was to hit Amitabh’s mouth, causing him to fall on a table. The shoot took place according to scene plan and looked completely real. But one corner of the table pierced badly in Amitabh’s stomach. His stomach membrane (which keeps the abdominal organs connected and protects him from chemicals) and the small intestine were torn. He underwent surgery in Bengaluru.
It is said that there was some improvement in his condition 4 days after the accident, but the next day when the condition deteriorated again, he was brought to Mumbai and admitted to Breach Candy Hospital. The doctors’ efforts and the fans’ blessings paid off, and on September 24, 1982, he recovered and returned home.
