Fear of human-elephant conflict in Chhattisgarh after calf drowns in dam

Mahasamund: An elephant calf drowned after it fell into Samoda dam in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district. The elephants tried their best to save the calf but were not successful.

The pachyderms somehow managed to pull the calf out of the dam but it had lost consciousness by that time and could not survive.

After the incident the elephants are angry. They are attacking the cattle wandering about in the area. The elephants can go on rampage after the death of the calf.

The forest department had planned to control the wild elephants with the help of their captive elephant. But the department’s captive elephant has already been sent to Sarguja. At present the forest department is not taking any action to deal with the situation.
