He also cheated youths in the name of providing job; Basna police arrested accused from Raipur
Raipur: “Hello my name is Benjamin Matthews; I’m SP from central crime team.”
Benjamin used the same name and designation to introduce him to anyone he met. He took advantage of the unsuspecting women and cheated, sexually exploited them. The police have arrested Benjamin Mathews, 34, from Raipur’s Dhaneli area.
Few days back, a woman had registered a complaint of physical abuse and cheating with Basna police in Mahasamund against Matthews – who is a resident of village Kanjittukara at Ayyur in Kerala. With the help of the cyber team, the police arrested the accused from a construction site in Dhaneli area of Raipur.
SIM cards, pen drives, forged letters, I-cards recovered
Police recovered 25-30 SIM cards, memory cards, pen drives, forged letters of police and other departments besides four separate press cards in his name, fake identity cards of political parties, fake medals, 5 ATM cards, 8 bank passbooks and accused’s photos taken in police uniform from Mathews’ residence.
During investigation of the case, a police sub-inspector Hemlal Nag called Benjamin and quizzed him. Benjamin was infuriated and threatened the SI that he would get him transferred.
Married in Indore, Raipur, Kerala too
Benjamin married a young woman in Indore. He has two children. He has also married women in Raipur and Kerala. Raipur SP Santosh Kumar Singh said it is being investigated how many people the accused has cheated so far. He also cheated people amountig to lakhs in the name of providing jobs to them with police, CISF and narcotics department. Cases against the accused are registered in different states.
‘There is some problem in my account’
Benjamin used to befriend girls and women by claiming he was an officer. After gaining the trust of gullible women, he used to tell them that there was some problem in his bank account. He used to obtain the woman’s bank account number on the pretext of getting his salary credited in her account. The accused used these accounts to credit money he made through fraudulent means.
Sexually exploited Facebook friend
Plaintiff Ritika (name changed) told the police that the accused had sent her a friend request on Facebook. He had claimed he was a senior officer of the Raipur Crime Branch. In his Facebook profile he displayed his photos in police uniform and also claimed he was a cyber expert.
The accused repeatedly sexually exploited Ritika after making false promise to marry her.
“He also took my ATM card and withdrew money. He took me to Hyderabad, Raipur, Bhilai, Ranchi, Visakhapatnam, Uttar Pradesh. He met many people there but kept me away from them,” Ritika told police.
Ritika further said, “This made me and my relatives and friends suspicious. Later we learnt that he was not an officer. He made indecent photos and videos viral when I said I would lodge a complaint against him.”
Benjamin has done the course of ethical hacking. So he prepared a clone of the WattsApp account of the victim and also hacked her mobile.
