New Delhi: India will have their skipper back in contention for the upcoming matches against Ireland, as Virat Kohli successfully passed the Yo-Yo test. He was all but set to play county cricket with Surrey, but suffered a neck injury, and was hence forced to cancel his plans of playing for Surrey.
However, there was some bad news for Ambati Rayudu as he failed the test, and will have a hard time retaining his place in the squad. The tests were organised at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) on Friday morning.
Alongside Rayudu and Kohli, former India captain MS Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar too underwent the fitness test. The tests were carried out under the watchful eyes of physio Patrick Farhat, trainer Shankar Basu.
The Indian team has pre-decided parameters for the Yo-Yo test, which helps to understand the endurance and fitness levels of a player. The current benchmark is 16.1 for India’ senior and A teams.
“Almost all the players including skipper Virat Kohli have comfortably cleared the qualifying mark for the YoYo test. Ambati Rayudu is the only player in the UK-bound squad, who has failed to clear the fitness test. His score is well below the permissible 16.1 set for the India and India A team. Rayudu will be dropped from the squad,” said a senior BCCI official to a news agency, however, his name was not disclosed.
