[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hat’s with everyone rearranging their homes before Diwali, or any other festival? Well, the common belief says that one must welcome god, or guests to a clean and healthy environment.
But unfortunately, this time of the year brings with it a lot of inconvenience for citizens living in Delhi-NCR, as the Air Quality Index worsens during the first part of November. Stubble burning in the neighbouring states, and firecracker-burning add on to meteorological factors like wind speed, solar direction and temperature which together are responsible for increasing pollution levels in the city. Therefore, the idea of a clean surrounding is pretty unthinkable as the air you breath in itself is polluting your entire being.
Monday’s thick smog was another reminder as to how bad it can get with each passing year. It is advisable to resort to preventive measures so as to not fall sick.
So, this Diwali express your love for your friends and family with these caring gifts and say goodbye to candles, crackers, chocolates and other ‘useless’ household items!
Wear one yourself and gift them to others as well. Every time your loved ones step out, a mask to protect them from Delhi’s pollution will be the ideal gift. A good mask which prevents particulate matter from entering your nose and causing damage to your lungs will be a much appreciated gift.
Since we are discussing about polluted air and if you are okay with raising your budget, an air purifier is the perfect investment to help your loved ones in the long term.
In case you do not want to spend on a machine or your budget doesn’t allow you to spend so much, choose plants — they are natural air purifiers. Having some greens in the balcony or by the windows not only look attractive, but the benefits of interior landscaping go far beyond the aesthetic. Plants reduce carbon dioxide levels, increase humidity, reduce levels of pollutants, such as benzene and nitrogen dioxide, and also keep air temperatures down. People who have plants at home quite instantly will agree that they reduce airborne dust levels. Having indoor plants are also associated with good mental health and immunity system.
Instead of purchasing a car or motorbike as a gift for your family or yourself, opt for a much cheaper and greener option. Buy a bicycle and do the environment a favour. Bicycles are non-polluting, since they do not run on fuel and give out smoke. In addition, one can exercise on their way to work.
Yoga class subscription
The friend who lives the most unhealthy lifestyle needs your help. Get him/her a six-month or annual subscription to a yoga class or a gym. Yoga is not merely a form of exercise but a deep process which helps fight bodily ailments and in keeping the mind peaceful. With its holistic blend of physiology, meditation and spiritualism, yoga is a complete package to one’s mental and physical well-being.
Drink water from copper bottles
Ayurveda says that are water stored in a copper vessel can balance all the three doshas in your body, (vata, kapha and pitta) and it does so by positively charging the water. Copper helps the body break down fat and eliminates it more efficiently, helping your body keep only what it will use, hence may help you in losing those extra kilos. Copper is known to be oligodynamic in nature (the sterilizing effect of metals on bacteria), and can destroy bacteria very effectively. This metal can cleanse and detox the stomach to ensure proper elimination of waste and harmful products, and ensures the absorption of nutrients from food. Furthermore, copper is anti-inflammatory, and by gifting one a copper vessle or bottle to someone you’re doing them so much good.
Take a detox trip
Plan a small trip with friends or family to the mountains or the nearest sea beach, away from this mayhem. A weekend or a week-long trip will freshen up your mind, and keep you safe from breathing in the smog and causing further damage to your lungs. Trekking, skiing, hiking or simply relaxed journey in the mountains will help you embrace some healthy living, at least for a few days.
Lastly, if you have stubborn kids who really want to burst crackers this Diwali, green crackers is a good option as they are less polluting in comparison to the usual ones we see every year. But there’s a catch to it; even though the Supreme Court has ordered that only ‘green crackers’ can be burst on Diwali for two hours at designated places, it has become a source of confusion. The idea of green firecrackers is not yet clear to either vendors or wholesalers. The crackers have not hit the market yet as per reports, therefore it might be difficult for you to come across a store selling them.
In case you plan to buy electronic items like lights, opt for LED lights instead of filament bulbs or even CFL bulbs — this goes for the colourful decorative lights which you purchase every year before Diwali. Not only do the LED ones save power they also last longer.
