Cricketers hit on ground, but films on wrestlers, athletes earn more

Mumbai: Director Anand Kumar is making a film on Indian football team’s former captain Bhaichung Bhutia. The trend of making films on the life of sportspersons has caught up in Bollywood. Work on eight sports biopic is in progress in the Hindi film industry now.

The trend began with the film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag based on the life of athlete Milkha Singh. The film did a business of Rs 100 crore, and its success paved way for other sports biopics.

Biopics on cricketers were less successful

No doubt cricket is the most popular sports in the country. But biopics on famous cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar and Mohammad Azharuddin were not so successful as they did business of Rs 50 crore and Rs 56 crore respectively. On the other hand Dangal, based on wrestler Phogat family, did business of Rs 374 crore.

Sports biopics

Currently films on sportspersons like Kapil Dev, Saina Nehwal, Abhinav Bindra, Pullela Gopichand, Dhyan Chand, Mithali Raj and PV Sindhu are being produced or planned to be produced.
