China/ Death toll due to coronavirus rises to 25; contact of 2 crore people cut from outside world to prevent spread of disease

In China, the effect of coronavirus is steadily increasing. 830 people affected by the virus have been identified across the country. Apart from this, 1072 people in 20 provinces are suspected to be affected by this virus. By Thursday, the death toll reached 25.

The 5 cities in China that have reported the highest number of coronavirus cases have been locked. A total of 2 crore people, including 90 million people from Wuhan, have been cut off from the outside world. Buses, trains and flights going out of these 5 cities have been canceled. Earlier, due to coronavirus affected people moving out of China, the effect of this disease has reached 9 countries worldwide.

Indian nurse is not suffering from Chinese coronavirus: A day earlier, an Indian nurse working in a hospital in Saudi Arabia was found to be coronavirus infected. However, the Saudi-based Indian embassy says the nurse is not suffering from the type of virus that killed 25 people in China. It is reported that the nurse is suffering from MERS-COV type of coronavirus and not 2019-NCOV (Wuhan) type.

The affected nurse is being treated at the Aseer National Hospital and is recovering well, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said.

In a tweet, he said, ‘Update from @CGIJeddah : About 100 Indian nurses mostly from Kerala working at Al-Hayat hospital have been tested and none except one nurse was found infected by coronavirus. Affected nurse is being treated at Aseer National Hospital and is recovering well.’

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to take urgent steps in ensuring expert treatment and protection to those affected from the virus.

A travel advisory was issued on January 17 and put up on the ministry’s website and also on the Twitter handle for wider circulation.

‘Port and airport health organisations have been sensitised and thermal screening has been initiated at the international airports of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Cochin airports,’ the statement said.

China seals 5 cities; Hotlines set up for Indians: Meanwhile, China on Thursday locked down five cities, including Wuhan, suspending all public transport in an unprecedented move to contain the coronavirus that has infected over 630 people and left 17 others dead, dampening the celebrations of the Lunar New Year.

The Indian Embassy in Beijing has set up hotlines for assistance of people from the country.

Chinese officials assured all assistance, including food supply, to the Indians who stayed put in the Hubei province, the Indian Embassy in Beijing said in a press release on Thursday.

Prohibiting people from leaving their homes without reason: The administration has barred people from the worst-affected five cities – Wuhan, Izhou, Huanggang, Chibi and Xinjiang. Public transport and trains have been stopped in these cities. People are not allowed to leave the house without reason. Also, large gatherings of people have been banned.
