Consumers groaning under excessive power bills in Punjab get relief; AAP campaign yields result

Sangrur: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Member of Parliament (MP) Bhagwant Mann has claimed the ‘bijli andolan’ launched by the party is yielding positive results. He told media persons that the Punjab government has relented and ordered the electricity department to reduce the excessive power bills.

The beginning has been made from village Gharacho in Bhavanigarh under Sangrur assembly constituency. Mann said bijli andolan or power campaign had been launched from Gharacho and village Sheron under the Sunam vidhan sabha constituency. He said people having only two bulbs and two fans in their homes had received power bills of Rs 20,000-25000.

Under the campaign, Mann had re-connected the power connections disconnected by the electricity department at Jagowal in Amargarh.

Rs 41,240 bill reduced to Rs 6500

The department has reduced the power bill of Nahar Singh of Gharacho village to Rs 6500 from the earlier Rs 41,240. Similarly the bill of Angrez Kaur has been reduced to Rs 1200 from Rs 21,780.

Nahar Singh said he sells vegetables to sustain his family and was shocked to receive excessive bill.

Meters were running very fast: SDO

Powercom Gharacho sub-divisional officer (SDO) Dharmpal said the meters were checked in lab and it was found that they were running very fast.

Farm worker received bill of Rs 21,780

Beant Singh, another resident of Gharacho village, said he is a farm worker and received bill of Rs 21,780. He showed the bill to Bhagwant Mann. The electricity department employees reduced the bill to Rs 1200, he said.

AAP to raise issue in the assembly

Mann said AAP will raise this issue in the assembly. He said electricity committees are being set up at village level to listen to the grievances of people and then the issues will be raised with the electricity department officers. He said the present Congress government is working hand in glove with the electricity companies to loot the people of state.
