BSP founder Kanshiram had undertaken cycle yatra in many states before party’s inception

Raipur: Two years before he founded Bahujan Samaj Party, Kanshiram had taken out cycle yatra in many northern states including Delhi, UP, Punjab, Himachal, and Haryana. He had visited a number of villages and held dialogues with villagers. This was a unique initiative in the country’s political history at that time. It is a file photo of that period.

Kanshiram founded BSP in 1984 to work for Dalits, marginalised communities and downtrodden. He contested the 1984 Lok Sabha election from Janjgir-Champa seat.

Kanshiram made use of his experience gained during cycle yatra even during campaigning and canvassed for his party while riding on the bicycle. He was accompanied by Dauram Ratnakar, who is the BSP candidate from Janjgir-Champa seat for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Dauram Ratnakar, is a three-time MLA who has contested Lok Sabha elections previously.

Ratnakar said Sahab (Kanshiram) had asked all candidates to campaign only on bicycle. He said the use of bicycle helped candidates to know the real situation of their area and the problems of the people.
