After playing an elderly shooter in Saand Ki Aankh, Taapsee Pannu will now be seen donning cricket gloves and pads in her forthcoming film. The actress is performing the lead role in Indian women’s cricket captain Mithali Raj’s biopic, Shabaash Mithu.
While there were reports that the actress will be playing the role of the cricketer in the latter’s biopic, Taapsee never endorsed the same. Today, on Mithali Raj’s birthday Taapsee took to social media to announce the news.
Taapsee Pannu shared several pictures of herself with the skipper in which Mithali is seen cutting a cake.
Mithali said her reach will increase: During the announcement of the film, Mithali said – I have always raised my voice not only for cricket but also for women in every field. Viacom 18 is not only going to bring my story to life on screen but also help me to reach to girls who have the power to dream.
Mithali’s achievements: Often regarded as one of the greatest batswomen to have ever played the game, she is the highest run-scorer in women’s international cricket and the only female cricketer to surpass the 6,000 run mark in WODIs. She is the first player to score seven consecutive 50s in ODIs. Raj also holds the record for most half-centuries in WODIs. In June 2018 during the 2018 Women’s Twenty20 Asia Cup, she became the first player from India (either male or female) to score 2000 runs in T20Is, and also became the first woman cricketer to reach 2002 WT20I runs. In September 2019, she announced her retirement from T20Is to focus on ODI cricket. The former captain Mithali Raj became the first woman to complete 20 years in international cricket.
Taapse will be seen in another biopic: Apart from Shabaash Mithu, in which Taapsee will be seen playing a cricketer, the actress will be seen in another biopic of athlete Rashmi from Gujarat. The film is titled as Rashmi Rocket and a motion poster of the film was released earlier this year.
