Ara: In a shocking incident in Bihar, a woman was brutally assaulted by her husband and in-laws as she failed to conceive even 18 years after marriage. They tried to burn her alive on a funeral pyre after she became unconscious. The police reached the spot just in time and rescued her.
Villagers informed police
The incident took place at a village in Ara town of Bhojpur district (Bihar) on Monday. The in-laws took the unconscious woman to Sarikapur Ghat to perform her last rites. But villagers informed the police before they could light the funeral pyre. The in-laws escaped from the spot and police found the woman lying unconscious on the pyre.
Sandesh police station in-charge, Avdhesh Prasad Singh, and ASI Kaisar Ali rushed the woman to Sandesh Referral Hospital. She was identified as Laxmi Devi, wife of Ravindra Thakur, resident of Sandesh village. Her parents live in Bachri village.
‘Husband, in-laws used to beat me’
At the Sandesh Referral Hospital, the woman said her husband and in-laws often beat her as she was childless. On Monday, they beat her up and banged her head against the wall. She became unconscious and found herself lying on the pyre when she gained consciousness.
The woman married Ravindra in 2001. When she failed to conceive after several years of marriage, her husband and in-laws started torturing her. She informed her parents and after their intervention, her in-laws promised not to harass her. But after sometime they started harassing her again.
