New Delhi: Upon her return from the 18th Asian Games, Indonesia where she became the first Indian woman wrestler to bag an Asiad gold, Vinesh Phogat got engaged to her long time boyfriend, Somvir Rathee, outside the arrival gates of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, in the presence of her near and dear ones.
It was also the grappler’s 24th birthday.
“Thank you everyone for making me feel special with your warm and beautiful birthday wishes. I am really touched and humbled with all the blessings showered on us. This birthday will always be a memorable one,” she later wrote on Instagram.
Rathee is a Greco Roman wrestler himself, and played a crucial role in supporting Vinesh since the time she returned from the Rio Olympics in 2016 with a knee injury.
After her victory at the Asian Games, Rathee congratulated Phogat on her victory. “I know how much hard work has come before this victory. Whatever she is today is because of her hardwork and the entire nation’s faith and love for her, without which this would not have been possible. Please keep giving your love and faith always. Every Indian is proud of you always and I pray you will continue to make the nation proud in the future as well,” he said in an Instagram post.
Just a few days ago, after her win at the Asiad, Vinesh took to her Instagram account and shared a photo with Rathee, with the caption, “The best decision I ever made! Glad you pinned me for life.”
