Asiad gold medalist Tajinderpal Singh Toor loses father on day of return

New Delhi: It was a heartbreak for Asian games gold-medalist Tajinderpal Singh Toor, as he received the sad news of his father’s demise while he was en route to his hometown Moga in Punjab from Delhi airport — where he landed in from Jakarta. His father Karam Singh has been fighting from cancer for the past two years. Singh’s condition was rapidly deteriorating. Owing to which, Toor decided to immediately leave for his hometown as soon as he arrived at the airport, but on his way, he received the bitter news.

Earlier, while talking to PTI, Toor had said, “My family never pressurized me to attend my father in the hospital and it was always my friends who took care of all the hospital formalities in my absence. I have not gone home much in this period since I was training in Dharamsala. Now I will meet my dad but I will be there for only two days. I have to get ready for the next challenge. My coach M S Dhillon also needs to be credited for the hard work put in by him.”

The Athletics’ Federation of India (AFI) also expressed grief over the sad news. Through their official Twitter handle, the sporting body said, ”AFI is in deep shock. We received Tajinder Toor, our Asian Shot Put Champion Gold Medalist at the airport last night & as he was on his way to hotel, sad news of his father’s demise reached us. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Our heartfelt condolences to Tajinder & his family.”

Tajinder won the gold medal at the Asian Games 2018 in shot put after creating a national record in the event with a 20.75 m throw. After bagging the medal, Tajinder had dedicated the win to his family.
