Army jawan martyred, 2 terrorists involved in Pulwama attack gunned down in an encounter in J&K’s Anantnag

A jawan was martyred in a gunbattle with militants in Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, a police official said, a day after an Army major was killed by them during an encounter in the district.

The official said two terrorists have also been killed who were later identified as Jaish-e-Mohammed’s Sajjad Maqbool Bhat and Tauseef. The slain militants were involved in Pulwama attack of February 14.

Acting on a reliable input about the presence of terrorists in Bijbehara area of the south Kashmir district, security forces started a cordon and search operation on Tuesday morning.

The search operation turned into a gunfight after the terrorists opened fire on the forces, who countered.

A jawan was hurt in the gunbattle, the official said, adding he succumbed at a hospital. The exchange of fire was going on when last reports came in.

On Monday, Major Ketan Sharma died and another officer and two troopers were wounded in an encounter with militants in the district’s Achabal area. A terrorist was also neutralised.

The same day, terrorists also targeted an Army patrol unit with a vehicle fitted with an improvised explosive device in Pulwama district. Nine jawans and two civilians were injured. They are recovering at a hospital.
