Shooting sensation Manu Bhaker reminded Haryana sports minister Anil Vij on Friday, of a yet to fulfil Rs 2 crore cash award promise, which he made after she won a Youth Olympic gold medal.
The 16-year-old won accolades with her stunning exploits in shooting ranges across the world, winning multiple gold in her maiden senior World Cup, Commonwealth Games, besides the top prize at the Youth Olympics last October.
The pistol shooter from Jhajjar, posted screenshots of Vij’s tweet in which he had promised her cash award of Rs 2 crore on behalf of the state government and wrote, “Sir Please confirm if it is correct… Or just Jumla (sic).”
In defense, Anil Avij tweeted that the shooter should have come to the sports department asking about the matter before going public. “Manu Bhaker should have first confirmed it from the Sports Deptt. before going to public domain. It is disgusting to denounce a State Govt which is giving highest awards in the Country. Bhaker will will will get 2 crores as tweated by me and as per notification at that time (sic),” he said.
A few hours later, Vij tweeted that the reward money will be disbursed in this very month.
“Initially it was 10 lakh, then he (Anil Vij) made it Rs 2 crore, I had made plans what investments I’m going to make for practice, I felt weird when they reduced it by 1 crore, it’s a really good thing now that he has made it Rs 2 crore again,” Bhaker had told ANI.
According to the changed policy of the state government, which came into effect just before the Youth Olympics, Rs 2 crore was given to the gold medallists, Rs 1.25 crore for silver medallists and Rs 80 lakh for the bronze winners. Earlier, the Youth Olympics medallists used to get Rs 10 lakh, Rs 7.5 lakh and Rs 5 lakh respectively.
