Anchor flees Saudi amid ‘indecent dress’ probe

Riyadh: Saudi Arabian TV presenter Shereen al-Rifaie who was being probed for wearing “indecent” clothes has reportedly fled the country on Thursday after the controversy erupted.

The kingdom has launched an investigation into Shereen, who works for Dubai-based Al Aan TV. She was reporting on the lifting of the ban on women driving when her white abaya – a loose-fitting, full-length robe – was blown open by the wind to reveal white trousers and a white top below.

This sparked criticism for allegedly “violating country’s dress code for women”. The clip sparked outrage online, with critics using the Arabic hashtag ‘Naked woman driver in Riyadh’.

‘wore decent dress’

Following the launch of the probe, Shereen shared an image on Snapchat of a plane ticket and her passport, indicating that she fled the country. She is quoted by a Saudi news site as saying, ‘I was wearing decent clothes, and God will reveal the truth of what has been said to me.’
